EL PARQUE DE LA PAZ

Colombia

The project stems from an idea of the Colombian government to commemorate peace after 50 years of civil war.
The chosen area is located at 10 km from de Puerto López, Governation of the Meta
The terrain extends for 62,000 m² area and has a vast varied landscape between hills and valleys.

The CONCEPT

The project takes the form of a styled tree, which grows along the entire surface of the ground
Beginning with that idea concept, geometry is being adapted on the topography of the site and in a way that the casual circulation permits different ways to discover the place
by enabling visitors to choose their own path.
Visually easily distinguishable the main road that can be used as a driveway in case of necessity, and different levels of walkways – ramifications that are distributed on the ground.
The ramifications find different paths, suspended or adjacent to the site level, which lead to the terraces with panoramic view and recreation areas.

In order to highlight the war conceptually, it was decided to use raw materials such as cement, corten and glass.
This choice was made to underline the harshness of war and the scars that remain on nature and in the memory of the population.
Along the way, we find corten walls that cut off the branches and separate the different paths on different altitudes creating stairs or bridges.
The two paths meet at different points, up to the main square where there is the entrance to the Peace Museum, a staircase that leads into the main hill.
On the top of the hill, there is the main attraction – the Monument of Peace, a statue of 30 meters high Christ designed by a local sculptor.
The main building has administrative and management use and defines the entrance to the park. It has two entrances, one at a parking level and the other at a higher level.
The building is made of glass and surrounded by micro-perforated corten plates.
The administrative offices are arranged towards the park for a better view.
A staircase on the facade, between the corten plates, rises on the terrace roof with a wonderful view of the park.
The steel structure performs large overhang that covers park entrance.
In front of the museum, entrance lays an outdoor amphitheatre for events with two buildings under the paths which planned to use as souvenir stores
The entrance of Peace Museum represented by staircase surrounded by corten pathways that cut the square and invites you to the hill.
A “dark path” has been created in order to metaphorically exalt the darkness of war: the museum is a unique space with a large water pool surrounded by a spiral ramp that runs along an inclined slope adjacent to the hill.
The slope inclination is from 4% to 8%. It is a meditation space where you can relive the history of the past years through exhibition panels along the way.
From inside the museum around the water, you can see the monument. The dark environment highlights, even more, the exit of the spiral path that leads to “the salvation” – Christ and an open skylight that represents the end of the war and long-awaited peace.
The meaning of war in contrast with nature is always presented in the project.

The park supposed to commemorate and remind the hard years of the Colombian civil war
The signs that remain in society should not be forgotten and this what the project calls up to show with rough forms and mystic paths and meditation spaces.
